The King West neighbourhood has always been one of the most popular areas in Toronto. Often compared to the SoHo neighbourhood in New York City, King West is for those looking for a home that’s in the middle of the action – shopping, restaurants, cafes and bars. You’ll also be within walking distance to Toronto’s entertainment district and Harbourfront.
Boarded by Spadina and Dufferin Streets, King West has seen its fair share of condo developments. If you’re looking for a proper house or semi-detached, this likely isn’t the neighbourhood for you. If you’re looking for beautiful lofts and condos, both new and old, King West should definitely be on your radar.
Neighbourhood Highlights & Favourites
The decision to live in King West should come as an easy one if you’re a young professional and want to live in the centre of the action and within close proximity of your downtown job. Most King Westers don’t have children and are either living independently or as a couple, making socializing here one of the best spots in the city to meet likeminded individuals.
There are many benefits of living in King West, but our top reason for loving this neighbourhood so much is that everything you could want is within walking distance to your doorstep. All of the services one could need, including doctors, dentists and dry cleaners are all in your area, as are grocery, cafes and even specialty condo-size furniture stores to help decorate your space.
Living in a condo here may make you feel like hosting family and visitors overnight may be a challenge, but with the swanky 1 Hotel Toronto coming to 550 Wellington Street West, you may be spending more time at your guests’ hotel than your own condo. Formerly The Thompson Hotel, 1 Hotel Toronto is scheduled to open in 2021 and promises to delivery on every critical point that makes 1 Hotels so amazing. We’re certain the rooftop pool and stunning city views will be a mainstay of the newly revitalized property.
With so many fantastic restaurants, you’ll never have a shortage of places to eat. Everything from casual Mexican eats at Wilber or sausages and beer at Wvrst, to some of the best spots in the city – we’d recommend Jacob Steak & Co. or Patria – both are sure to impress your date, significant other or business colleagues.
King West Condos & Real Estate
Condos have been popping up for a number of years in the King West neighbourhood, and there aren’t many signs showing it’s going to slow down. What we love about condos in King West are they aren’t all the same – there is a bit of character to each building, and you’re able to find a nice selection of floor plans, depending on your size and budget.
Some buildings have been around for 15+ years, including the DNA1 building on the corner of King West and Shaw. It was the first of three buildings by Canderel, and the units here typically go very quickly when they hit the market. It’s a great mid-size building, but the age of the building means the units are large but may be a bit of work. Condo renovations can be a great investment so if you’re looking for something that needs just a slight facelift, this may be the building for you.
King West also features some incredible loft projects – one of our favourites is the Massy Harris building. The original units have incredible character, with wood beams, open-concept living and that true hard loft people absolutely love.
If pre-construction is on your mind, there are still some fantastic opportunities to be had in the neighbourhood. And we’re not talking about King Toronto. There are a number of new projects in King West that are in the pipeline to launch later in 2021, including 485 Wellington that’s high on our radar.
King West will always be a neighbourhood that holds its value, for many first-time buyers to seasoned real estate investors. Be sure to put it on your radar if you’re looking to get into the condo market – you’ll never be bored or disappointed in your decision to call it home.
