Living in Port Credit

Buying

From its humble beginnings as a trading post over 300 years ago to its status as the west GTA’s premier waterfront community, Port Credit continues to be one of the most well-known and desirable communities to live in ourside of the downtown Toronto core.

This family-focused community at the mouth of the Credit River that stretches along the Lake Ontario shores is often referred to as Mississauga’s “Village on the Lake”. With exceptional schools, a stunning waterfront and all of the necessities you could possibly need at your doorstep, it’s no wonder many house-hunters have this area on the top of their list.

Living in Port Credit

The charm you find in Port Credit you can’t just find anywhere in the GTA. Port Credit is a vibrant waterfront community, filled with history, culture and personality. Each year Port Credit attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists due to its beauty and community feel. It’s a hub of outdoor excitement during the warmer months when patios are full, and the streets are bustling with action.

Port Credit is filled with many different types of families – from young professionals looking to settle down roots for many years to come, to empty-nesters enjoying the freedom and luxurious conveniences Port Credit has to offer.

Port Credit Views

Many young families come from the downtown core, perhaps moving out of their condo and into a forever-home where they can raise a family and live in an exceptional school district. Many residents of Port Credit come and stay – which provides for a great mix of ages smiling through the streets on a sunny afternoon.

The Harbour is a year-round part of Port Credit but when you are living in Port Credit you will see how it really comes alive in the warmer season – no wonder this is such a popular summer tourist destination. It’s home to boating, fishing charters, cruises, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, not to mention hiking along the beautiful Waterfront Trail which connects to numerous parks and pathways along the lake and river shoreline. The natural ambiance is a big part of the reason the waterfront has won awards for design – nature’s beauty is still here. On top of that, Port Credit Harbour Marina is the largest freshwater marina in Canada.

Living in Port Credit is an absolute dream for business professionals who are commuting to Toronto. If you can get in to one of the mid-rise or high-rise towers near the Port Credit GO (which is just 3 blocks from the Waterfront), you’ll find you love living just 10 minutes to the station – especially in winter.

Where to Eat and Drink

Another advantage to living in Port Credit is the number of fantastic restaurants and pubs right outside your door. There are so many options to choose from – here are some of our favourites.

Snug Harbour:
There is no better view in the city than from Snug Harbour. Sitting right on the Port Credit Harbour, this restaurant serves some of the best seafood in the city. Try the Chowder or the Blue Crab Cakes, followed up with some fresh oysters as a starter and follow up with the seafood Bouillabaisse as your main. You won’t be disappointed.

Colossus:
A staple of the community for many years, Colossus is always busy and serves some amazing food. Order the Horiatiki salad, the tzatziki and lamb souvlaki for a traditional, delicious Greek meal.

Spice Lounge & Tapas:
Spice is a great little spot that serves tapas and is perfect for quiet dates or a get together for some drinks. The cozy restaurant features amazing wine selection, signature sangria and great food made from the freshest ingredients. Spice delivers tastes and wines reminiscent of the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Wines, small plates and entrees are perfect for sharing and comparing.

The Pump House:
Pump House Grille Co. opened in Feb 2003 and quickly became a Port Credit favourite serving up famous classics with a sophisticated twist. Everything on the menu is done really well including steaks, sliders and fish & chips, but everybody knows that if you want the best wings in the city, you get them grilled and you get them here.

If you’re looking to dine at home, we must mention an amazing shop to get steaks that will make your friends and family say WOW. Dry Aged is a must visit if you’re thinking of grilling – their counter is filled with incredible cuts. From store-made burgers and sausage to king cuts of your favourite steak, this place is worth the drive to Port Credit if you don’t have the luxury of living close by.

Port Credit Real Estate

Homes in Port Credit are a mix of historic century homes, pre-war homes, and post-war suburban style houses, condominiums and town homes. There is truly a mix of options in this village. Though you will see some modern custom builds, most homes are the original design. Port Credit was once a very modest town, with small lot and homes. Because of this, full demolitions and 4000 square foot reno’s are not possible on most lots. Most homes have kept their original charm but have been polished up with new finishes and beautiful landscaping.

Port Credit Real Estate

Over the past 15 years, real estate here has been undergoing a major revitalization that is continuing today. Boutique shops and restaurants are opening up to serve the growing population flocking to newly constructed luxury high rise buildings such as TANU Condos and luxury town homes. Older smaller homes are being renovated into luxury homes that offer an urban-family lifestyle that can’t be beat, and many buyers want to live here.

Port Credit is also thought of as an amazing village to retire in, and our eye is on The Shores of Port Credit by Verve Senior Living. Consisting of luxury townhomes and two rental buildings, the amenities for retirees and seniors can’t be beat.

Owning in this neighbourhood does require a higher financial investment when compared to most other communities in Mississauga, but for those who have the means, from first-time buyers to families looking to upgrade their home, you’ll fall in love with the lifestyle and rarely ever leave. Not every neighbourhood has the demand or values to support a return on investment for full renovations or tear downs, but Port Credit is definitely one of them. If you want to put down roots for the next 15-20 years, and want the house of your dreams, you will recoup the cost invested over time.
